Cinemalaya is finally coming to a close — at least for me — today, with the final screening of 24k at the UP film center at 5pm.

It’s been a very interesting experience. I learned sooo much.

Again, I’m very thankful to everyone who watched our film, to everyone who makes Cinemalaya possible, to my cast and production team, my co-producer DV Savellano, my supportive family — Ted, Uyayi, and Ulan, my parents and siblings, my advisers, and all the other people who supported me and went on this journey with me.

I am humbled by, and most especially grateful to the Almighty up there whose hand was very much felt during the entire production of this film.

I’m happy that some members of my team, such as Diwa de Leon, my musical scorer, and Pao Orendain, my DOP who won for best cinematography at Cinemalaya, earned a lot of mileage (and thus more work opportunities) from doing this project. They certainly deserve it.

As I mentioned previously, I believe this will be the last time that I will ever do a low-budget independent film.

Many people think that I came to this decision because I got singed by the experience of producing and shooting 24k. The reason isn’t that superficial.

Filmmaking has its highs. I can understand why people go on and on making indie films, even though they don’t financially gain from it. Like treasure hunting, it’s the passion — the thrill of making a film and telling a story — that keeps them going.

Making 24k as my first feature affected me in a deeper way. Ironic really, because in the film, one of the messages I wanted to convey was to find what is truly 24-karat, what is truly valuable in one’s life. Yet, as I was in the process of making the film, I was neglecting precisely that which was really valuable to me.

Very recently, some events in my personal life further emphasized that point.

My family, most especially my two kids, Uyayi and Ulan, are my 24k. They are the most precious things in the world to me. If independent filmmaking — because of the sheer amount of work that I have to do myself — means that I will be figuratively away from them for months and months for every project, then I would be no different from the characters in my film.

I’m turning my back, going down the mountain, and going home — before it’s too late.

In other words… Hellooo prosperity! Welcome back!

Oooh I’m so excited! I’m so close to the finish line.

Diwa is just making some minor adjustments and revisions in the music and it’s final. Ditoy Aguila who’s handling sound design now will be finished with it by Monday. Color grading is also scheduled to be finished on Monday.

My gulay! You cannot imagine how eager I am to put all the elements together!

Yesterday, I had my poster printed out and submitted to the CCP. The people at the media arts division pointed out that there was something missing. Walang pangalan ng Cinemalaya sa poster!

After reading the contract again, I realized I had an obligation to include their name in all publicity material – which i don’t mind at all.

So here we have the poster again. Tom slightly revised it as well, and I think it looks better.

After the storm part2

Here I am, resolved to never again make another indie film in my life.

As I mull over the events of the recent shoot, I get a text asking me to call Robbie Tan, head of the Cinemalaya monitoring committee.

“Robbie, I’m not done with shooting. I scheduled eight shooting days. I shot for ten days, I still didn’t finish it.”

Robbie assures me that it’s perfectly normal and encourages me to keep it up. I explain that I didn’t want the quality to suffer just because I’m pressed for time or money. He says that that’s the way it should be.

They expect a rough edit soon. I reply that I’d get to it.

By golly, I’ll get to it… and remember the pains we went through to shoot it? (more…)

Test party

I got feedback yesterday from Robbie Tan regarding our test shoot. He’s the head of the monitoring committee for Cinemalaya and the one who’s really nakatutok on what the 10 filmmakers are up to. He said that the result of the shoot was generally good. He nonetheless gave me a few comments and suggestions on how to improve. The main gist of it was to have a lot of coverage so that we would have enough footage to choose from during editing.

Fooling around in Vigan

We got back from Ilocos Sur earlier than scheduled. I tried, I really tried, to rewrite my script while I was in Vigan, but there were just too many distractions, especially with a festival going on. So I opted to go home on Feb 2 after our ocular and get some real work done.

Off to Ilocos Sur!

It’s less than a month before our scheduled start of shoot for 24k. My assistant director, Edwin Guillermo, and I just arrived in Vigan and are enjoying the festivities of the Kannawidan festival. Tomorrow my new director of photography, Pao Orendain, will come over and we’ll all be going to our locations in Suyo for another ocular. I hope he followed my advice and did some jogging before coming over. Our locations are not for the weak and squirmish.

Suyo, with its mountains, and rivers, and hanging bridges, and its mysterious, rustic ambiance, is my favorite place in Ilocos Sur. I can’t wait to start shooting there.
